I had been buying some sushi rice when I noticed her bursting bags of shopping from local retailers. I wanted to ask her what she had bought and how to cook it, as my own culinary experience of cooking Asian food could still do with some improvement. I made a mental note of my tried and tested recipes - the Green Thai Curry, the Broccolli in Oyster Sauce, Tarka Dahl, Yellow Bean Stir-Fry, Nasi Goreng and a rather superb homemade sushi.... I congratulated myself on having some knowledge, yet felt jealous of people who actually know how to cook those dried things in excitingly coloured plastic packets with illegible writing.
